PENALTY IN THAT CASE IF CONVICTED. IT’S HARD TO PREDICT THE SINGLE HOMICIDE THAT HAPPENS, RIGHT? BUT WE DO KNOW THAT THERE’S OTHER CRIMES THAT THAT CAN LEAD TO A HOMICIDE. ALBUQUERQUE POLICE SAY HOMICIDES ARE DOWN 50% FROM LAST YEAR. SO FAR, THERE HAVE BEEN 14 HOMICIDES THIS YEAR, COMPARED TO 27 AT THE SAME TIME IN 2020. FOUR SO THE RATE IS DOWN, BUT THE PERCEPTION OF CRIME REMAINS HIGH. WE SPOKE WITH APD’S DEPUTY CHIEF OF INVESTIGATIONS ON THIS TOPIC. HE SAYS THAT THEY’VE LISTENED TO THE COMMUNITY AND MADE CHANGES. THEY ASSIGNED UNDERCOVER UNITS ALONG CENTRAL TO TARGET DRUG ACTIVITY, MAKE ARRESTS. THEY’RE ALSO STRATEGICALLY PLACING MORE LICENSE PLATE READERS ACROSS THE CITY TO QUICKLY IDENTIFY STOLEN VEHICLES OR VEHICLES, LEAVING CRIME SCENES, AND THEY’RE SHARING INFORMATION MORE EFFECTIVELY DURING INVESTIGATIONS. WE MEET ONCE A WEEK TO DISCUSS THESE TRENDS, AND WHAT WE DO IS WE TRY AND IDENTIFY THE CURRENT CRIME TRENDS THAT ARE GOING ON IN THE CITY, AND THEN WE DEVOTE RESOURCES OUT TO THOSE AREAS. THE WAY WE START OFF THAT MEETING IS WE’RE HOLDING OUR COMMAND STAFF ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT WAS DONE IN THE PAST WEEK. AND WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU MADE IN YOUR AREA COMMAND? YOU ALSO SPOKE ABOUT THE NATIONAL GUARD COMING TO ALBUQUERQUE NEXT MONTH TO HELP WITH PUB
